His vote is not being threatened. But Senator Ben Nelson says he knows who started rumors that Offutt Air Force Base was being threatened with closure if he didn’t vote to end debate on health care reform.

Nelson tells us that when that source is exposed it will be “embarrassing for the other side of the aisle.” The Nebraska Democrat adds that he welcomes an investigation by Republican Senators, including Nebraska’s Mike Johanns, into the alleged threats.

Meanwhile, the bill itself is still not to Nelson’s liking – especially on the subject of abortion services that might be provided under the plan. Nelson says overtures have been made to alter the controversial language regarding abortion, but he continues to hold firm that he wants that item stricken from the bill.

Nelson says reaching a White House goal of passage by Christmas might be unreasonable. He says he is more focused on “getting it right.”
