Things are not as quiet as you would expect in the days leading up to Christmas around the Lincoln campus for the football team. No practices are scheduled until Christmas, but a lot of the players from the state of Nebraska are sticking around campus lifting weights and working on conditioning.
After Saturday’s practice, the team split up so out of state players could be with their families before the team gets back together at Christmas which would be a week away from the Holiday Bowl.
Head coach Bo Pelini talked about why this is the best time to give the players off. He felt with the rigors of a long season and a Big 12 Championship game, plus finals just wrapping up, he needed the give the players a break physically and emotionally. He expects the team to come back energized.
Pelini will not be fined or face any penalties resulting from comments he made about the officials after Nebraska’s 13-12 loss to Texas in the Big 12 championship football game on Dec. 5. In a statement released by NU athletic director Tom Osborne, responding to media speculation, said neither Pelini, the Nebraska coaches, nor members of his staff will face fines or other penalties from the Big 12. Now Pelini did nothing out of the ordinary in his postgame press conference, but reporters, captured Pelini on video after the game, screaming, “BCS! That’s why they make that call!” referring to the one second that was put back on the clock at the end of the game.
Alright the Bowl schedule before Christmas. If you’re hardcore bowl fan, you’ll be interested, but tonight the Las Vegas Bowl, BYU and Oregon State, that actually should be pretty good. Tomorrow night the Poinsettia Bowl from San Diego, Utah and Cal. That’s not bad either. Christmas Eve, the Hawaii Bowl. SMU and Nevada. I’m going with BYU, Utah and Nevada.
