Omaha Senator Brenda Council is holding off on her bill to repeal the death penalty in Nebraska as she introduces another bill that would force the State Auditor to do a cost study analysis on the Death penalty. Some State Senators say they don’t care if the death penalty costs more, it still needs to be in effect.
“I think they ought to care what it costs in these economic times when we look at what other states across the nation are facing and the actions they are taking…because they will care about the cost of any other program that comes before this legislature this session.”
Council says if her bill to repeal the death penalty was voted on today, it probably wouldn’t pass. She thinks a cost study could change that.
