The legislature is advancing a bill from Senator Scott Lautenbaugh on first round that would allow Games and Parks to extend deer hunting seasons or designate special dates for deer hunting in an effort to reduce the deer population in the state. Senator Tom White of Omaha says the deer are even hurting themselves.
“If you spend time in the woods, you will see a lot of animals needlessly suffering, you will also see what Senator Louden just alluded to, that nature will find it’s own balance. The population of white tailed deer is a lot higher, they think, than it was when the pilgrims first landed on Plymouth Rock.”
An amendment from Senator Leroy Louden of Ellsworth also allows landowners to kill predators such as mountain lion on the spot as long as they report the kill to Games and Parks.
