The south side of Norfolk saw flooding from the Elkhorn River in June, but was not threatened by the North Fork River that runs through the heart of the city.
A Corps of Engineers flood control project that diverts water east of Norfolk gets part of the credit for that, but the reservoir at Willow Creek State Recreation Area near Pierce also protected Norfolk.
Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District General Manager Stan Staab says the newly constructed Maple Creek Recreation Area northwest of Leigh (LEE) also prevented flooding along the west fork of the Maple Creek.
Staab says the Maple Creek project was completed and the draw down pipe was closed on May 15th. By June 12th, the water level was two foot above the regular pool elevation.
