Governor Dave Heineman is very disappointed in the negative direction he says Democratic Challenger Mike Meister took during an interview with the Nebraska Radio Network. Meister says the problem of Illegal Immigration is much ado about nothing – saying 5% of the people cause the problem.
“It is a very important issue. Nebraskans do not want illegal individuals receiving taxpayer funded benefits, so if he’s opposed to that, that’s just one more issue where we differ, because I don’t think illegal immigrants should be receiving taxpayer funded benefits.”
Meister also accused the Governor of painting a Rosy picture. Heineman says he is very proud of how Nebraska stands financially compared to the rest of the country.
“I just returned from a Governor’s National association meeting, where almost every other state in America has a much higher unemployment rate than we do. So it’s not wbout being rosy, it’s about being factual and the fact that in Nebraska we’re a much more positive state than a negative state.”
Meister is very critical of Heineman on how fast the state is moving on wind energy. Heineman says the state is advancing in that area and there have been challenges because Nebraska is the only 100% public power state. The federal incentives apply to private power.
“This is the beginning of accelerated wind energy development in this state. I work very, very closely with the legislature, so when he criticizes me on wind, he is criticizing the entire legislature, we’ve worked closely together on this to foster this growth, to move forward as a state.”
The Governor says he has an event on his schedule this week announcing a new wind power project.
