Friends thought drowning victim was pretending

A tragic accident at Carter Lake near Omaha early this morning. Omaha Police Officer Jacob Bettin says a man drowned in the lake early this morning. He says three men had been fishing at the lake since late Sunday night. He says a park caretaker had seen the three.

“Observed an open fire. Heard some noises and saw the group of three were along the shoreline fishing and horsing around the water.”

Officer Bettin says the park caretaker told them to put the fire out around 1:00am and told them to leave.

“He asked them to leave. As two of the friends were putting things away they came back and didn’t see their friend. They did not hear him.”

Authorities say the two friends of the victim thought 52 year old Eugene Sharp was pretending to drown. When he didn’t re-surface, the two friends went into the lake to investigate.

“They went into the water to get a better look. They located him in the water, pulled him to shore and that is when the police arrived.”

Pratt was rushed to an Omaha hospital and later died. The group had been fishing since late Sunday night.
