Two students at Omaha’s Burke High School have already been expelled the first week of school after being accused of bringing handguns to school. Omaha Public School’s spokesperson Luanne Nelson says one student was on a school bus when he accidently discharged a handgun. The incident went unreported until another parent called officials Thursday morning. It is not known if the driver heard the gunshot.
The student with that gun then called a friend on another bus and told him to check the safety on his weapon because his had just gone off. Officials used that information from the student’s phone and located the friend who did have a loaded gun in his backpack inside the school. Nelson says this is very disturbing and the district is taking action.
