USDA Rural Development, Farm Service Agency and Natural Resources Conservation Services in Nebraska recently wrapped up their 2nd annual food drive. Vicki Schurman is the Public Affairs Specialist for USDA Rural Development and says from July 19th through the 30th, they collected more than 8,300 pounds of food.
“We are very proud of that number and actually nationwide; we collected over 150,000 pounds of food so it was a very successful food drive this year.”
Schurman says USDA employees, friends and farmers all donated to the cause.
“They opened it up to perishable items from farmer’s gardens this year and also we collected cash and checks to purchase supplies. The food will go the local food bank and each office could choose their own distribution center.”
Schurman says the food will be distributed to area food pantries during a time when it is needed most.
“The food banks, in the summer months, their supplies become very depleted so this will help put more supplies on their shelves for those in need.”
