Creighton’s McDermott on Oscar Robertson watch list

Creighton forward Doug McDermott is among 20 players selected by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association for its 2012 Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List. Members of the association’s board of directors chose the players to be included on the list as contenders for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, to be presented to the national player of the year by its namesake in New Orleans at the USBWA’s College Basketball Awards Breakfast on March 30.

McDermott ranks third nationally in scoring (23.4) and eighth in field goal percentage (.624) for Creighton, which is 21-3. He’s previously been named to the Midseason Watch List for the John Wooden Award. McDermott leads the MVC in scoring (23.4 ppg.) and in three-point percentage (.513) and is second in rebounding (8.4 rpg.) and field goal percentage (.624). The last player to lead the MVC in scoring and rebounding in the same season is Southern Illinois legend Ashraf Amaya in 1991-92. The last MVC first-team All-American was Bradley’s Hersey Hawkins (1988), and the last MVC second-team all-American was Kyle Korver (2003).
