An unfortunate consequence of the aging process is the chances of taking a fall increase dramatically. Heather Lenz is a Wellness Specialist with the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Engage Wellness Program and is also Nebraska’s only certified “FallProof” trainer. She says falls are the leading cause of death and disability for people 65 years of age and older and one in three people over the age of 65 fall each year.
Lenz says those who do fall and don’t hurt themselves may develop a fear of falling and that could limit their physical activities. That could lead to even greater chance of falling. A new program, FallProof balance and mobility training for seniors, can help folks in that age range avoid taking a tumble. Lenz says the class is tailor-made for each participant. Extensive pre-assessments are given to each person so they can determine individual balance impairments. Lenz says classes include training on center of gravity control, gait enhancement, multi-sensory training and strength and flexibility.
The class is recommend for those age 50 and older and start on March 5th.
