Colorado State University basketball coach Tim Miles has been named the new head coach for the University of Nebraska.
Miles comes to UNL after five seasons with Colorado State, after leading the Rams to 20 victories this season and their first berth in the NCAA Tournament in nine seasons.
“Tim Miles is an ideal fit to lead our men’s basketball program at Nebraska,” Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne said. “He has built successful programs at four schools at different levels of college basketball. Tim is from this part of the country, has recruited the Midwest and will relate well to our players, prospective recruits and our fans.”
The Rams increased their win total during each season under Miles in Ft. Collins. The Rams finished this season 8-6 in the Mountain West Conference. The Rams were a #11 seed in the NCAA West Regionals. Miles won District VIII Coach of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. Overall, Miles compiled a 283-220 record in 17 seasons as a head coach, including three conference championships and six postseason tournament appearances.
“I am thrilled to be the basketball coach at Nebraska,” Miles told the media during a news conference.
“I appreciate Dr. Tom Osborne for having the faith and confidence in me to do this. I want to come through for him. When Dr. Tom Osborne bets on you, you want to come through for him. I grew up in Big Ten country, watching Nebraska football, I’ll still watch Nebraska football. He is the kind of person; I think he said to me one time that he has a lot of personal equity in the basketball arena, in Haymarket Arena. It occurred to me that he has a lot of personal equity in the state of Nebraska, the University of Nebraska and especially this athletic department. That means a lot to me. His right hand man Marc Boehm has been a great guy to get to know. I am excited about where we’re trying to go.”
Miles served as head basketball coach for six seasons at North Dakota State from 2001 to 2007 and at
Southwest Minnesota State University from 1998 to 2001. He began his career at Mayville State (N.D.) University in 1996 and 1997. Miles is a native of Doland, S.D., and earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education and health/physical education from the University of Mary in 1989. He earned a master’s degree from Northern State in 1990.
Miles and his wife, Kari, have a daughter, Ava, and a son, Gabriel.
