Tuesday marks the first meeting between Creighton and Nebraska of the 2012 baseball season. The Huskers hold a 70-41-2 record over the Bluejays, including taking two of three last season.
The Creighton pitching staff again put up good numbers last week, holding a 2.08 ERA in the third weekend of conference play. Five different pitchers finished the weekend with flawless marks, highlighted by Erik Mattingly’s 9.0 inning, no-hit effort in the Saturday afternoon game. Nebraska comes into the opening game of the series with a 22-12 record, including taking two of three from Iowa last weekend. As a team, the Huskers are hitting .320, with 264 runs scored and 381 hits, all numbers which rank in the top-five of the nation.
Tuesday’s starter for NU, Jon Keller, is one of eight players who have made at least one start on the season. Keller has eight starts, holding a 4.17 ERA while allowing opponents to hit better than .300 (.307). CU will start Ty Blach who has made two appearances against Nebraska, striking out five batters in 3.0 innings of work. Blach was named MVC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 21 after throwing 5.0 innings of scoreless baseball in the season opener at UCA (2/17). Struck out six.
