Lincoln Saltdogs first baseman Phil Hawke made the decision on Monday to retire from baseball. The 28-year-old Hawke finished with a career batting average of .288, with 88 home runs. Half of those homers came in his three seasons in Lincoln, which ranks him third all-time for the Saltdogs. Hawke was the Saltdogs’ player of the year in 2009.
Hawke played college baseball at Louisiana-Lafayette before signing as a free agent in the Texas Rangers’ organization in 2005. He spent two years with the Frontier League’s Windy City franchise, where Baseball America named him to the All Independent Leagues second team. His contract was purchased by Lincoln.
