Concordia eliminated in GPAC baseball tournament

The morning started out wet in Lincoln but by the end of the day the fifth seed Northwestern Red Raiders and seven seed Mount Marty Lancers found themselves high and dry and 2-0 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Baseball Championship in Lincoln, Nebraska. The tournament is hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan and the Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau at Nebraska’s Haymarket Park and Lincoln’s Sherman Field. Northwestern and Mount Marty will open day two of the tournament at 9am on Friday in the winners bracket.

Doane, Nebraska Wesleyan, Dakota Wesleyan and Morningside all went 1-1 on day one and face elimination in their first games on Friday. Briar Cliff and Concordia were eliminated with 0-2 records.

One game remains at Sherman Field (12:30 Morningside vs. Doane game), with the balance of the tournament scheduled to be played at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

Doane won the regular season championship this year with a 16-4 league record and has the league’s first NAIA Opening Round bid secured. The GPAC tournament will be played according to the NAIA-Baseball Coaches Association Eight-Team Double-Elimination Bracket.

The GPAC Tournament Champion receives the second automatic berth to the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round. If Doane wins the GPAC Tournament, the tournament runner-up will secure the second automatic bid. NAIA Baseball has two national bids for every ten teams in a conference (only baseball and basketball allow two for ten in the NAIA, all other sports are two bids for every 12 teams). One national bid is allowed for every six conference teams in all NAIA sports per NAIA guidelines.
