Slithering snake zaps out the power in Nebraska City

A large reptile caused big problems for Nebraska City early this morning.

Nebraska City utilities manager Daniel Patton says a black snake crawled into a substation four blocks north of the city’s power plant shortly after midnight, causing a widespread power outage for about 90 minutes.

Patton says roughly a third of Nebraska City residents were without electricity until crews channeled from the city’s other two substations.

An eyewitness reported seeing large explosions in the sky above the substation at around the time of the outage. Patton admits the arching can look like explosions.

He says the station’s circuit breakers and equipment sensed the fault created by the snake, and limited the amount of damage.

Except for a few minor problems, Patton says most of the substation’s systems are back to normal.
