A plea is being issued for blood donations.
“Blood donations in the month of June, across the country for the Red Cross, have been down about 50,000 pints from where we thought they would be,” according to April Oppliger with the American Red Cross Midwest.
Oppliger says that’s about half the supply the Red Cross had on hand at this time last year. Oppliger suspects the early, warm weather has kept regular donors busy and the upcoming Independence Day holiday has pushed back blood drives normally scheduled for early July. Also, donations from high school and college students drop drastically when school breaks for the summer.
The American Red Cross is urging all Nebraskans who can to give blood prior to the Independence Day holiday, which is next week.
