Kearney pitchers Ben Borer and Zach Yocum combined to hold Papillion-La Vista South to four hits in a 2-1 win, in the championship game of the Mike Peterson American Legion baseball tournament at Sherman Field in Lincoln on Sunday.
Borer allowed one run in 5.1 innings and Yocum earned the save finishing the game off. Kearney’s offense came in the second inning when Grady Kowalski singled and scored on a single by Caleb Lundgren. In the fourth, Keegan Fitzgerald singled, advanced to third on an error and scored on a hit by Drew Butler.
Papio South’s lone run came in the sixth after Borer walked Josh Kiger. Brent Kirsch singled and Curtis Bussard hit a sacrifice fly. After another walk, Kearney coach Brad Archer went to Yocum who came on in relief and got a strikeout Kirsch was thrown out at third. The tying run at third in the seventh but Yocum got a fly ball to end the game.
