Omaha man drowns in Calamus Reservoir attempting to save child

An Omaha man has drowned attempting to save an 8-year-old struggling to swim in the Calamus Reservoir near Burwell in central Nebraska.

Loup County officials say 49-year-old Craig Strong died Saturday afternoon. The child survived.

Strong went in to the water to assist the child who was struggling. Strong, an asthmatic took water in to his lungs and because of his medical condition, died from complications of the asthma.

Loup County Attorney Jason White says bystanders administered CPR until emergency teams could arrive. Loup and Garfield County Rescue and law enforcement officials responded to the scene around 2:20 pm in the Dry Valley area of the Calamus Reservoir, but were unable to revive Strong.
