A driver pursued during a high-speed chase in southeast Nebraska late last night apparently hanged himself with a rope which was around his neck and attached to the truck.
The Nebraska State Patrol and the Richardson County Attorney’s Office say the driver sped through two counties in a heavy-duty pick-up reaching speeds of 85 miles-per-hour before driving over spike strips. The strips blew out the front tires. The truck left the roadway and ran into the farm field. Officers say the driver had a rope around his neck that was attached to the truck. The driver apparently jumped from the truck while it was still moving. The rope snapped his neck.
The chase began in Pawnee City and ended at 11:35pm on a county road just north of Highway 4 near Humboldt in Richardson County. Officers from the Nebraska State Patrol as well as the Pawnee and Richardson County Sheriff’s Departments pursued the vehicle.
An autopsy will be performed. The name of the driver is being withheld pending the notification of his family.
