Authorities say western Nebraska man kills woman over text message

Authorities in western Nebraska say a man angered about a text message has shot and killed a woman in Sidney.

Cheyenne County Attorney Paul Schaub charged 53-year-old Larry G. Martinez of Sidney with First Degree Murder Thursday morning. An additional firearms charge was tacked on.

Court documents say Martinez was arrested at 8:30 Wednesday night and allegedly told investigators he shot 30-year-old Mandy Kershman over a text message from her that made him mad.

Sidney Police responded to a report of shots fired at the home on 1740 Grant Street Wednesday afternoon. Leland Blake lives there and told Sidney Police Martinez came to the house, was let in, cursed at the victim and shot her. Blake says he waited a few minutes before coming out of his office in fear of being shot, and that’s when he found his friend Kershman, saw the suspect driving away, and called 911.

Details on the timeline of Martinez’ arrest aren’t clear, but his truck was seen at his home and Sidney police reported he was later driving north in an apparent attempt to flee the area.

Martinez is being held in the Cheyenne County jail.
