In a story being reported by The Chronicle, the Big Ten Conference is considering a proposal that would give Jim Delaney the authority to fire coaches, if the commissioner and a committee of presidents felt the actions of an individual member of one of the schools, harmed the league’s reputation. This is obviously a knee-jerk reaction to the Penn State/Joe Paterno cover up.
The proposal has not been approved yet, but it is included in an 18-page plan that also includes financial penalties and suspension. The Big Ten could also consider suspending Penn State, or even banning the university from the conference. The Council of Presidents and Chancellors must approve any disciplinary action taken by the conference with at least eight members voting in favor of such a move.
