Volunteer firefighters from Nehawka, Nebraska battled a fire inside their own fire station Monday night. Fire Chief Sean Huckleberry says a passer-by called in the fire around 8:20 pm and his department immediately responded. However, all their equipment was inside the fire station.
Fire crews from Plattsmouth, Union, Murray, Manley, Weeping Water and Avoca rushed to their aid and remained on scene until 2 am Tuesday.
Chief Huckleberry says there were six emergency vehicles inside the fire station and all but one were destroyed or damaged. There was other emergency equipment and fire gear inside the building. They do have insurance but are not sure how much it will cover. He says grants and funding for equipment is almost non-existent. The building itself can be salvaged.
Chief Huckleberry says other area departments have agreed to take over their fire and rescue calls until they can rebuild their fleet and replace equipment.
