Creighton soccer ready for another deep run in post season play

The third ranked Creighton Bluejays open the 2012 Men’s Soccer season against Northern Illinois on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Morrison Stadium. The team replaced seven starters from last year’s NCAA College Cup Semifinal team that posted a 21-2-1 overall record.  Second-year head coach Elmar Bolowich brings in 15 new faces to combine with a talented core of returners look to make it back to the school’s fifth NCAA College Cup.  The Jays tied ninth ranked Maryland 3-3 on Aug. 17 and beat Nebraska Omaha 1-0 on Aug. 19.

Scouting the Northern Illinois Huskies:

NIU finished last season with a 15-6-0 record and reached as high as 13th in the adidas/NSCAA national ranking. The Huskies return eight starters from last season’s MAC Tournament Championship team, including senior goalkeeper Jordan Godsey (Ocean Springs, Miss./Ocean Springs) and leading scorer, junior forward James Stevenson (Falkirk, Scotland/St. Mungo’s). Godsey started all 21 matches for the Huskies in goal last season and recorded 12 shutouts with a 0.70 goals against average. Stevenson scored a team-high 15 points with a team-best six goals.

99 and Counting:

Friday’s contest vs. Northern Illinois will be Creighton’s 99th match at Morrison Stadium, The Jays enter the night 73-13-12. Next Friday’s showdown with fellow Mid-American Conference contender Akron will be the program’s 100th contest at the facility.
