Helium shortage nixes Labor Day parade balloons

There will be something missing at Monday’s Labor Day parade in Omaha.

Terry Moore is the chairman of Septemberfest and says their huge balloons that fly above the crowd are grounded this year because of the nationwide helium shortage. Moore says they will still be part of the parade and will be inflated and ride on float-like platforms.

Due to the helium shortage only half the number of balloons will be used for the first Husker touch down on Saturday and no more balloon releases are planned for the remainder of the season. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade could have fewer balloons in the air due to the shortage. This is a temporary problem and Moore expects the balloons will be back in the air next year.
