In light of the gambling allegations against Omaha State Senator Brenda Council and the use of campaign money, Jerry Bauerkemper with the Nebraska Council on Compulsive Gambling says using other people’s money to gamble with is a sign that someone has a problem.
Bauerkemper says problem gamblers get the money wherever they can to support that addiction. Many times they borrow money with the full intent of paying it back when they hit that “big win” but often times that don’t happen and individuals and organizations suffer.
Senator Council has apologized for misuse of campaign funds and had banned herself from a Council Bluffs casino in 2005. She plans to plead guilty to two misdemeanor charges on Tuesday.
Bauerkemper says the Nebraska Council on Compulsive Gambling has a 24-hour, 7-day a week hotline for problem gamblers or those impacted by a gambler. That number is 1-800-522-4700.
