State unemployment rate holds steady at 4%

The state unemployment rate remained steady at 4% in August.

State Labor Commissioner Cathy Lang notes that manufacturing continues its rebound from the recession, now employing more than 94,000 Nebraskans.

Other sectors indicated strength as well, according to Lang, who mentions the sectors of professional and business growth, private education and health, as well as leisure and hospitality as the strongest sectors in the state economy. Lang says leisure and hospitality showed considerable strength this summer.

“Now, it’s very seasonal, drops way off in the winter months, but this summer it was a very strong sector for Nebraska,” Lang tells Nebraska Radio Network.

The national unemployment rate is 8.1%

The total labor force in Nebraska continues to be over one million.

Lang says despite the strong, positive numbers many Nebraskans remain under-employed, some working more than one job. She says that gives the state room to grow and can be used to assure businesses considering locating here that they will be able to hire the workers they need.

“As we continue to see expansion and growth of our existing businesses or businesses coming to Nebraska, we believe that we have the talent to fill that pipeline need,” Lang says.
