Shawn Eichorst has resigned as Miami’s athletic director and several media outlets are reporting that he is expected to replace Tom Osborne as Nebraska’s athletic director. Eichorst lasted less than a year and a half at Miami.
Eichorst came to the Hurricanes under the recommendation of Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez, a close friend of Miami’s President Donna Shalala. Eichorst worked under Alvarez for six years and was Wisconsin’s Chief Operating Officer for athletics. Alvarez is a graduate of Nebraska.
Eichorst is expected to replace Osborne, the Cornhuskers’ legendary football coach from 1973-97 who returned as Nebraska’s athletic director in 2007. Osborne said he will stay in the department to help with a transition through the end of July. Osborne will also help with recruiting.
