Midseason MVPs for the Huskers–Big Red Report (AUDIO)

Well, we’re at the midseason report here for the Huskers, 4-2 with a bye week and joining me on this Big Red Report is Sean Callahan who helps us out during the season with special features. We square off with our midseason MVPs for offense and defense. Sean picks Taylor Martinez on offense and Eric Martin on defense. I’m going with Rex Burkhead and linebacker Will Compton. Who are your picks for midseason MVPs? Give a listen and see if you agree with our logic.

I think Burkhead is the emotional leader of this offense and when he’s out there on the field the whole feel of the offense is different.  You look at the loss to Ohio State, the Huskers  got outscored 28-14 in the second half in a game in which Burkhead rushed for 119 yards on 14 carries in little more than a half at Ohio State.  The other loss for NU came at UCLA where Burkhead did not play.

Defensively my MVP is linebacker Will Compton.  He’s healthy, he’s playing at a high level and he’s been one of the more consistent defenders and I think his stats back it up.  20 solo tackles, second on the team.  33 assists, by far the most on the team and 53 total tackles.  The next closest is Damion Stafford at 39.  Six tackles for loss for 28 yards, second on the team behind Eric Martin’s eight for 31 and Compton has also added three sacks, two pass break ups and a fumble recovery.
