Concordia University men’s basketball coach Grant Schmidt resigned today after 23 years at the position. Schmidt cited personal and professional reasons for the resignation which comes unexpectedly just weeks before the start of the season.
Concordia athletic director Devin Smith stated that the men’s basketball team is in no trouble with NAIA rules infractions and would not publicly comment on Schmidt’s decision.
Schmidt was 445-276 and had teams reach the final four of the NAIA tournament three times, most recently in 2005 when the Bulldogs reached the finals.
Marty Kohlwey will take over head coaching duties. This is his second stint with the school in Seward, NE. He was an assistant from 1999 to 2006 and returned last year.
