UNMC study: exercise can help cancer survivors rebuild immune system

Scientists at the University of Nebraska Medical Center recently conducted a small preliminary study where they looked at exercise and its impact on the immune system of cancer survivors. Dr. Laura Bilek was one of the researchers and says these early results show that exercise by cancer survivors may help them ward off recurrences of the illness.

The research shows that exercise rids the body of old and useless cancer cells and that makes room for what is known as T cells. These T cells typically fight infections and suppress cancers and potentially kill surviving tumor cells.

This is an early study and Dr. Bilek says more research is needed.
