Nebraska’s Better Business Bureau is warning residents to be on the lookout for scams in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. President Jim Hegarty says this happens every time there is a disaster.
Hegarty says those wanting to make a donation to help the victims should do so only on websites associated with legitimate organizations. He says scammers do an amazing job mimicking logos and websites of organizations. If you receive a text message asking for a donation Hegarty says ignore it. Again, contact the charity directly.
Hegarty says it is also a good idea to make sure that 65% of all donations go directly to victims or to programs with a presence at the disaster site.
