Reports from Washington indicate President Obama plans to nominate former Nebraska United States Sen. Chuck Hagel as the next Secretary of Defense.
Several news organizations report that Obama will nominate Hagel, a Republican, as Defense Secretary and counterterrorism Chief John Brennan as director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
A former announcement is expected around noon.
Hagel has served as the co-chairman of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board and a member of the Defense Policy Board. Hagel served as United States Senator in Nebraska for two terms, between 1997 to 2009.
Hagel upset Nebraska Republicans during the United States Senate race when he came out for Democrat Bob Kerrey over Republican nominee Deb Fischer. At the time, Sen. Mike Johanns speculated that Hagel endorsed Kerrey, because he was angling for a cabinet post in the Obama Administration an accusation Hagel vehemently denied.
