Huskers edge Purdue for first Big Ten tourney win (VIDEO)

Against a team that starts three freshmen, it was Nebraska’s freshman, Shavon Shields, who came up big scoring 19 points as the Huskers beat the Boilermakers 57-55 in the first round of the Big Ten tournament. Brandon Ubel, who did not play in the first meeting between these two teams, scored 16 points and eight rebounds.

Nebraska led by two at the break and opened the second half with a 9-0 run and then held off a surging Purdue squad that had a chance to tie at the end. Purdue’s Terone Johnson missed two shots in the closing seconds.

In the final 40 seconds, Ray Gallegos made one of two free throws, but on the miss, the ball was pulled down by Ubel, who was fouled. He hit the second giving the Huskers a three point lead, 56-53, but D.J. Byrd put in a rebound off a missed three, making it a one point game with 13 ticks on the clock.

Gallegos made 1 of 2 free throws again to make it a two-point game and Johnson missed two shots in the lane with Gallegos pulling down the rebound to secure the win.

The Huskers will play #10 Ohio State in the quarterfinals.
