High tech surgical simulation suite opens at UNMC

The University of Nebraska Medical Center formally dedicated the Dr. Wayne and Eileen Ryan Surgical Simulation Suite this week. Primary donor and former Asst. Dean at UNMC’s College of Medicine Dr. Wayne Ryan attended the dedication and says this center is modeled after those used at the Mayo Clinic.

The simulator also features pre and post op care areas and will be a tool used by students, staff and current physicians. The facility will also be used by students attending Creighton University School of Medicine.

The equipment allows for “virtual reality” scenarios in the middle of surgery and monitors will pick up every move made by student surgeons. Professors run the session or interact with students from a control room behind one-way glass.

The suite was made possible by a $1 million gift from Dr. Ryan and his late wife Eileen. Dr. Ryan stated this project touched on his three passions of education, research and clinical care.
