Family of Lincoln woman killed by inmate driver files claim against the state

The state of Nebraska has less than six months to respond to a claim by the Joyce Meeks family of Lincoln. Meeks attorney, Tim Cavanaugh says that is the first process in seeking $5-million in damages from the state regarding the death of Ms Meeks last month when she was hit and killed by an inmate driving a state owned van in Lincoln. The claim was filed against the state of Nebraska last Thursday.

Cavanaugh says the family “is gratified the state has chosen to stop this program but it is now time for the state of Nebraska to accept full responsibility for Joyce’s death.”

The inmate behind the wheel, Jeremy Dobbe had multiple convictions for DUI and one for reckless driving and is currently serving time for meth. Cavanaugh says if the state denies the claim or does not respond in the required time frame he and the family will be ready to file a lawsuit in the court system against the state.
