Huskers and Bluejays ranked nationally in volleyball poll

The Nebraska volleyball team will enter the 2013 season ranked 10th in the AVCA Coaches Poll. The Huskers (962 points) were one of seven Big Ten teams to earn a spot in the top 25, joining No. 2 Penn State, No. 6 Minnesota, No. 7 Michigan, No. 14 Michigan State, No. 16 Purdue and No. 23 Ohio State.

The Huskers return AVCA honorable-mention All-Americans Morgan Broekhuis and Meghan Haggerty in 2013, as well as adding All-Americans Kelsey Robinson and Mary Pollmiller to the roster. During the 2012 season, Nebraska finished with a 26-7 record and made a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the 31st time, ending its season in the NCAA Regional final.

With nine letterwinners and four starters back from last year’s team that went 29-4 and finished the fall ranked No. 24 nationally, the Creighton Volleyball team will enter the season with a preseason national ranking next to its name for the first time in 2013.  Creighton was ranked No. 25 in the preseason 2013 poll, and were the only BIG EAST team to receive recognition.

Last year’s squad advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after sweeping Missouri Valley Conference regular-season and tournament titles.  Top returnees include all-conference selections Melanie Jereb, Leah McNary and Kelli Browning.

The poll is led by defending national champion Texas, followed by Penn State, Stanford, USC and Washington.
