Ewing man found guilty of killing couple, setting fire to their home

A Ewing man has been found guilty of killing a northeast Nebraska couple and setting their house on fire.

The Attorney General’s office says 33-year-old Matthew Hinrichsen could face two life sentences in the deaths of Alex and Victoria Lee Vargas, newlyweds. Hinrichsen had dated Victoria before the couple married.

The bodies of the couple were found in early December of last year in their burned mobile home in rural Antelope County. The AG office says autopsies indicated Alex died from three gunshot wounds. Victoria had been beaten to death.

“This man entered the Vargas home, shot and killed Alex and beat Victoria to death before setting the home ablaze,” said Bruning. “Today’s conviction helps to ensure he is held accountable for his crimes.”

An Antelope County District Court jury found Hinrichsen guilty on two counts of first degree murder, one count of possessing a firearm while committing a felony, and one count of using a firearm to commit a felony.

Hinrichsen will be sentenced January 28th.
