Nebraska U.S. Senator Mike Johanns questions whether the the Veterans Affairs track record of treating our nation’s veterans is getting worse. Johanns was among senators questioning Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki during a hearing on Thursday. At Thursday’s hearing, Shinseki says he hopes to have a preliminary report soon on how widespread treatment delays and falsified patient scheduling reports are at VA facilities nationwide.
At the senate hearing, Shinseki resisted calls from a Democratic senator to bring in the Justice Department and FBI for a criminal investigation. There are allegations that up to 40 veterans may have died while awaiting treatment at the Phoenix VA center. On Friday, undersecretary for health care at the VA Robert Petzel resigned. Petzel was the top official for veterans health care under Shinseki. Petzel had announced in September that he was planning to retire later in 2014.
