Nebraska U.S. Senator Mike Johanns minces no words in expressing his feelings on the recent swap of Taliban prisoners at Guantanamo Bay for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. Johanns says he’s still surprised at the release of five Taliban fighters despite the comments of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Wednesday.
“I guarantee, these folks are going to be back on the trail killing people,” Johanns says. “We just returned four-star generals, al-Qaeda four-star generals, to the battlefield.”
Johanns says he respects Hagel, but can’t believe the deal was made.
“It’s mind-boggling,” Johanns adds. “Secretary Hagel can talk all day long, but this was the worst deal in the history of the United States in my personal opinion and it’s outrageous.”
There is no doubt according to Johanns, that the released soldiers will find their way back to the battlefield now that they’re out of U.S. custody.
