Perone leaves Omaha Benson’s basketball program for assistant coaches job at Hastings

Omaha Benson girls basketball coach Jon Perone was hired as an assistant women’s coach at Hastings College, leaving the Bunnies after leading them to their first Class A state championship in March. Perone led Benson to its first state tournament berth in 16 years back in 2013 and last season, his seventh with the program, he coached the Bunnies to a 26-2 record, which included a 19-game win streak.

Big turnover for the final four teams in Class A from last season.  Only one coach remains with his team and that’s fourth place finisher, Lincoln Northeast with Steve Bartek. Kip Colony of Millard West, took an assistant principal’s job at Millard South. Marc Kruger, who coached Bellevue West to state runner-up finishes the past two seasons, replaced Colony at Millard West, which finished third.

“Coach Perone has been diligent in building Benson High’s girls basketball into a championship level program,” said Hastings Head Coach Carrie Hofstetter, whose team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament in 2014. “His ability to teach the game, his desire to perfect his craft, and his competitive drive are all attributes that will be extremely valuable to our program moving forward. Having coached the Pinnacle Bank AAU team with Jon last summer, I am already familiar with and aware of his strengths and am confident he will hit the ground running. I am absolutely thrilled to have him join our staff.”
