Driver might have fallen asleep in I-80 crash that killed two

Witnesses report the driver didn’t panic and might have been asleep just prior to the car plunging down a steep hill on Interstate 80 between Seward and Lincoln early Friday morning.

The accident killed 29-year-old Nell “Renee” Jorgensen of Hannibal, MO and her 11-year-old daughter, Morgan Smith. Jorgensen’s four-year-old son survived with minor injuries.

The Seward County Sheriff’s Office says the family had been heading to Wyoming for a family reunion.

Witnesses told sheriff’s deputies Jorgensen left the interstate without slowing down, as if she were merging with traffic. The westbound car drove over the grass median, across the eastbound lanes of the interstate, and down a steep hill.
