Three truck accident on I-80 kills one, seriously injures another (UPDATE)

A three truck accident at a work zone on Interstate 80 in Seward County claimed one life and seriously injured another person.

The Nebraska State Patrol has released the names of the victims.

Dead is 28-year-old Marcus Lathon of Chesapeake, VA. Seriously injured in the wreck was 34-year-old Kwasi Obeng-Benne of El Paso, TX. Emergency crews flew Obeng-Benne from the scene to Bryan West Hospital in Lincoln.

Another driver was treated and released at the Seward Hospital.

The patrol says the crash occurred just before 5 o’clock Thursday afternoon near the 378 mile marker on eastbound I-80 just west of the Seward exit.

Two semi tractor-trailers had stopped in a work zone. The third semi, driven by Lathon, crashed into the two trucks. Obeng-Benne was a passenger in the truck. The driver of the second semi was treated and released from the Seward Hospital. The driver of the first semi was not injured.

The patrol closed a section of eastbound I-80 for more than three hours. The wreck remains under investigation.
