Wayne State volleyball picked for fifth in the Northern Sun coaches poll

Wayne State College is picked to finish fifth in the 2014 Preseason NSIC Volleyball Coaches Poll released Tuesday morning by the league office in Burnsville, Minnesota. Sophomore middle hitter Alyssa Frauendorfer was listed as the Wildcat Player to Watch this season. The Wildcats return four starters from last year’s team that was 22-10 overall and placed sixth in the NSIC with a 12-8 league mark in 2013, ending the season ranked 21st in the final AVCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll.

The Wildcats received 174 points in voting conducted by league coaches, just two points shy of fourth place Northern State. Seven-time defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul was the unanimous selection to win the NSIC this season, receiving 15 first-place votes and 225 points (coaches can not vote for their own team). Minnesota Duluth was second with the remaining first-place vote and 206 points. Southwest Minnesota State was third with 196 points followed by Northern State in fourth at 176 and Wayne State fifth.
Augustana (147 points) was sixth followed by Sioux Falls, Minnesota State, MSU Moorhead and Minnesota Crookston in the top 10.
Northern State junior rightside hitter Kelsey Chambers was listed as the NSIC Preseason Player of the Year.

Wayne State’s Player to Watch in the NSIC this season is 6-0 sophomore middle hitter Alyssa Frauendorfer. The Humphrey native was the NSIC and AVCA Central Region Freshman of the Year last season after recording 2.77 kills, 0.97 blocks and 0.59 digs per set in 2013. Frauendorfer ranked sixth in the NSIC last season with an attack percentage of .344 and was fourth in NSIC-only matches with a .358 attack percentage to earn First Team All-NSIC and AVCA Central Region honors.

Wayne State is scheduled to open the 2014 season on Friday, September 5th in the Oredigger Volleyball Classic in Golden, Colorado facing Bentley (Mass.) in a 2 p.m. contest.
