The Nebraska State Historical Society board has named a new director and CEO.
Members voted to hire Trevor Jones, who is working for the Kentucky Historical Society now as director of historical resources.
He will succeed retiring director and CEO Michael Smith, who says Jones stood out due to his experience.
“Work with their collections and a lot of statewide outreach programs, including oral history,” Smith tells Nebraska Radio Network. “I think it’s fair to say the search committee was impressed with the work that he’d been able to do with the Kentucky legislature, the people of Kentucky, and especially in getting their services out across the state.”
Jones has more than two decades in the historical field with museums in Illinois, North Carolina, and Wisconsin.
Smith says the organization has improved over the decade he led it, but there are still challenges Jones must address.
“The single biggest challenge we have is the other half of the Nebraska History Museum,” Smith says. “The state funded $8 million for renovations with an agreement with the legislature that we would then raise the money for permanent exhibits in that building and that’s about a $4 million challenge.”
Jones is expected to begin work at the Nebraska State Historical Society around August first.
