Gov. Pete Ricketts says it is time for Nebraska Republicans to unite behind Donald Trump.
Ricketts says continued efforts to find a third-party candidate will prove to be more than futile.
“We have a nominee now for the Republican Party, it’s Donald Trump. We need to get behind that nominee or if you don’t what you’re basically saying is you want Hillary Clinton to be the next president,” Ricketts tells Nebraska Radio Network affiliate KLIN. “We don’t get the choice of the candidate you may have supported months ago.”
Ricketts also has a message for Nebraska Republicans running for the Unicameral: votes matter.
Ricketts says the Nebraska Republican Party must hold state senators accountable when they vote against positions spelled out in the party platform.
“If you voted a certain way that was against what the party stands for you have to own it,” Ricketts says. “And that’s what I think is important is that you vote it, you own it.”
Ricketts has even backed some candidates running against incumbent senators who voted against the party platform.
The Unicameral is officially non-partisan, but most senators run as Republicans or Democrats.
