An 8th grader at St. Wenceslaus School in Omaha made it to the top 45 in the National Spelling Bee competition in Washington DC. Tharein Potuhera says when they asked him to spell the world “jacopever” he knew he was in trouble.
Potuhera says “I tried to find out how to spell it but I could spell “jaca”. I knew it couldn’t be a “y” and I didn’t think “j” so after about 20 seconds I went for it.” He said he was familiar with the word but had been mispronouncing it and that is what led to his downfall.
Potuhera says to prepare for the event he read the dictionary cover to cover. He says became familiar with the root and did some memorization but mostly learning how words from different languages are spelled.
Even though Potuhera didn’t win the spelling bee he is still a champion and made the top 45 finalists.
