Omaha police report a 51-year-old man shot and killed himself as an officer approached his vehicle early Saturday afternoon.
Jerome Bonnett, Jr. was pronounced dead at Nebraska Medicine, where he was rushed after the incident.
Bonnett had been under investigation by local, state, and federal authorities for allegations of fraud connected with his money management firm.
According to the Omaha Police Department, an officer responded to a report of a suspicious sports utility vehicle parked behind 5600 F Street early Saturday afternoon. The arriving officer drove up to the SUV. Bonnett was standing outside of it, on the passenger side. When the officer got out of his patrol car, Bonnett shot himself in the head.
The investigation uncovered the anonymous 911 call was made by the phone belonging to Bonnett.
The FBI had been investigating allegations of fraud against Bonnett’s money management firm. The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office had been moving to freeze the assets under the firm’s management, totaling $47 million.
Though charged, Bonnett had been free on bond.
In accordance with state law, the incident will be investigated by a Grand Jury as an in-custody death, because a police officer was present.
