A popular summer basketball league in Omaha begins its 11th year next week. The Metro Basketball League is run by Jason Isaacson and always features several players from Creighton and UNO.
Isaacson says the league provides college players more structure than they would get in pickup games.
“Really when we started it was to give college kids a chance to get in the gym and play in a competitive environment”, said Isaacson. “Our requirement has always been that you are a college player or at least had some college experience.”
The games are held at he Omaha Sports Academy and Isaacson says the games usually draw a few hundred fans.
“And I think what a lot of people like is that sneak peek to see some of the new recruits. Not all of them will be there but usually a majority of them are here for a portion of the summer so you get to watch some of the new guys that will be on the rosters.”
Games are on Thursday nights beginning June 16 and Isaacson says they will add a couple of Monday’s in July. The games run through the end of July.
