A summer sports festival is returning next month and an entry deadline is fast approaching. The Cornhusker State Games return July 15 through the 24. Last year Nebraska hosted the State Games of America.
“The State Games of America last year were for medalists from across the country along with Nebraskans and we had about 15,200 athletes from 47 different states”, said Executive Director Dave Mlnarik. “Now we go back to the Cornhusker State Games and were are looking at about 13,000 participants.”
Mlnarik says the Cornhusker State Games will typically draw athletes from 85 of the 93 counties in the state. The registration deadline for most of the 68 sports is June 22, and most of it will be completed online.
“We get about 85 to 90 percent of our registrations online and it is corhuskerstategames.com. You can also view all of the divisions, the list of sports and information about opening ceremonies and the torch run. It is all there online.”
Besides offering a wide range of competitions in traditional Olympic sports such as track and field, gymnastics and swimming, Nebraskans may also take part in less demanding events such as horseshoes, a mall walk and chess. Competition will be held at more than 70 sites in Lincoln, Omaha and surrounding communities.
